QATSIF Teaching Resource The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) has developed a teaching resource which aligns to the Year 10 Australian Curriculum: History which tells the story of ‘stolen wages.’ ResourcesSolar Eclipse Learning Activities
There are many quality resources that teachers can use with their students to learn about and prepare for the 2012 total solar eclipse. The rare and spectacular phenomenon will occur over northern Australia in the morning of 14 November. In partnership with Far North Queensland schools, the QSA has so far published two ‘solar eclipse’ assessments in our Assessment Bank :
Christian Meditation website The Townsville CEO has launched the ‘Coming Home – Christian Meditation for Children and Young People’ website which provides online resources for the practice and teaching of Christian Meditation. ICT Careers The I Choose Technology website is part of an initiative by the Queensland Government to provide information to students seeking to pursue careers and study options in ICT. My Skills Website The Federal government has launched the My Skills website to support students and employers who are seeking information on Registered Training Organisations and nationally recognised qualifications and accredited courses. Awards, Grants and CompetitionsAustralian Vocational Student Prize
Nominations are now open for the Australian Vocational Student Prize. The AVSP focuses on vocational achievement and a student’s personal attributes, such as determination, commitment and the leadership role they play in their school and community. Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program Additional government funding has provided the opportunity for more primary schools to join the Kitchen Garden National Program. Applications close February 2014 or when places are filled. BP Education Grants BP offers grants up to $10 000 to encourage schools to develop projects that add value to the school, the community and business environments. Applications must cover one of four themes. Applications close 22 February 2013. |
State and National SceneCatholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week in 2013 will be held from 21 - 27 July (Term 3, Week 3). The theme is: "Making a difference…inspired by Jesus." OECD's Education at a Glance Report The 2012 edition of Education at a Glance: OECD Indicators was released last month. The educational performance of over 40 member and non-member countries are compared in areas such as the output of educational institutions, impact of learning, investment in education, and organisation of schools. The report draws attention to the strong performance of Australia in achieving high success rates for young people with poorly-educated parents attaining a tertiary degree. NAPLAN Access teaching tips for persausive writing that have been provided by QSA. Availability of 2012 students’ writing scripts As schools are unable to photocopy student scripts under NAPLAN’s National Protocols for Test Administration, the QSA has made images of the scripts available for schools until 30 November 2012. To access students’ scripts, take these steps before 30 November 2012: • log in to the secure section of the QSA website using your school BIC and password (personal BICs cannot be used): https://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/qsa_secure/QSAlogin.do • download the files to the school network (as files are large, you may wish to reduce impact on your school’s system by downloading after school or overnight) • ensure that appropriate security measures are in place to maintain Australian Teacher Performance and Development Framework The Australian Teacher Performance and Development Framework was endorsed by Education Ministers at the Standing Council on School Education and Early Childhood (SCSEEC) on 3 August 2012. Nationally and internationally, there is unequivocal evidence that the quality of teaching is the most significant in-school factor affecting student outcomes. There is also strong evidence that better appraisal and feedback leading to targeted development can improve teacher performance. You are invited to peruse these documents, including the National Professional Standards for Teachers: (http://www.newsroom.aitsl.edu.au/performance-development) National Professional Standards for Teachers - Self-Assessment Tool The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is trialing items for a new online teacher self-assessment tool (SAT). Once finalised, the SAT will support teachers to reflect against the Standards. Better Schools As part of its National Plan for School Improvement the Australian government publishes a Better Schools newsletter which provides information about school success stories.
