Ursula Elms is back this year as the Assistant Executive Director - Learning and Teaching. We welcome her return. Under her leadership we will continue to offer a high level of support for all schools.

Maths Activity Guidelines - MAGs
The Maths Activity Guidelines for P - 3 have been revised based on feedback from teachers using the material. They are available on the Curriculum Place. Due to popular demand Geraldine and a group of teachers have been working diligently to produce MAGs for Year 4. Term One are available now on the Curriculum Place and the coming terms will be added as they are completed. All MAGs will be revised during the year as Geraldine receives feedback from those using them. A big thanks needs to go to Geraldine who spends a considerable amount of out-of-hours time on producing such wonderful resources to support learning in our schools. This year's conference will provide the professional support required to implement The Arts curriculum in 2014. The conference will be held at the Shang Ri La on Saturday April 27. Registrations forms will be available shortly. Request for Feedback ACARA has released a number of curriculum documents and seeking feedback on the following; Work Studies Year 9-10 Draft Shape Paper (due 24 March 2013), draft Languages in Chinese and Italian; P-10 (due 12 April 2013) and draft Health and Physical Education; P-10 (due 12 April 2013). Economics and Business The Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Economics and Business was published on 8 January 2013. The paper provides the initial draft rationale, aims and broad outline for the curriculum before the commencement of detailed curriculum writing. Tuesday May 14 - Language conventions; Writing Wednesday May 15 - Reading Thursday May 16 - Numeracy Friday May 17 - catch up testing Registration of Student Details Friday 8 February— Website opens for Independent and Catholic schools that need to upload their data. Monday 18 February — Website opens for schools to edit their data. Schools will need to check with Jayne Horsnell about the date on which their data will be available for checking. Friday 8 March — Website closes for all schools. A memo listing key dates for the data collection was published on the QSA website in January. Handbook for Principals Copies of the 2013 Handbook for Principals will be sent to schools mid-February. Requests for Alternative Formats Braille, large print, black and white testbooks and stimulus materials are available as an adjustment for students who regularly use these formats for learning and assessment. An electronic version of the tests is also available for students who are unable to access a pencil and paper test through any of the available adjustments, including the use of assistive technology. Applications for tests in alternative formats should be submitted by Friday 22 February. Electronic request forms are available from the school’s NAPLAN Student Details page of the QSA website, which can be accessed through the NAPLAN portal. |
State and National SceneSchools Clean Up Australia Day
In 2012, over 2600 schools registered - cleaning up their school grounds, gardens, playing fields, or even identifying an area in their community like a park or waterway where litter is a problem. So make a head start with planning your school’s 2013 events calendar and take a step towards achieving your sustainability goals while revitalizing your school! Register to participate in one of Australia’s largest community events, the 2013 Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 1 March. Regional Schools Constitutional Convention The Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Regions (DEEWR) has confirmed that the National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC) will take place from Wednesday 20 to Friday 22 March in Canberra this year. The topic is yet to be finalised but will focus on the issue of recognising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the Constitution. Education Queensland will conduct a Schools Constitutional Convention (SCC) program across the state culminating in the selection of 20 delegates to represent Queensland at the NSCC. To support the cost of the Conventions a participation fee of $300 per school team for non-Indigenous will apply. RTO Management Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has produced a general direction regarding transition and teach-out and retention of student work. School RTO information Schools registered as RTOs are reminded to check their contact details as they appear on the training.gov.au website. Commonwealth agencies communicate directly with schools using this contact information. 2013 Australian Training Awards Applications for the 2013 Australian Training Awards National Focus categories are now open. National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence is an initiative of all Australian Education Ministers to be held on 15 March 2013. Schools are called on to Take a Stand Together and register to be part of the National Day of Action.
