Monday 29 Schools are advised to finalise arrangements for students requiring adjustments or test exemptions by this date. All forms are available from the school’s NAPLAN Student Details page of the QSA website, which can be accessed through the NAPLAN portal: https://naplan.qsa.qld.edu.au/naplan. You will need your BIC and password Late April Schools in remote areas will receive their materials first to give them time to check materials, order any additional materials or deal with any problems. Schools in the south-east corner will receive their materials last. Year 9 materials will be delivered first. If you are in a P–12 school, you will receive your Year 9 materials in a separate delivery from the Years 3, 5 and 7 materials Testing protocols Please be aware of the protocols in the 2013 Handbook for Principals. All teachers participating in the tests should now have a copy, or download at: www.qsa.qld.edu.au/8021.html. Please read the protocols carefully. Persuasive Writing Task One of the features of last year’s writing task was the prevalence of the five-paragraph essay. The writing of many students suggested they were focused only on the structure. While students may score well using this form, they can only do so if they begin with well-developed ideas that are developed through the form. Students who did not score well wrote to the five-paragraph formula, but often slotted in unrelated or poorly related ideas. The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) 2012 data was recently released. The AEDI website provides a National Report and community level results. Principals have received an email with instructions on how to register their school to access the AEDI School Profile System. Changes to User Choice funding for SATs The Department of Education Training and Employment has announced changes to User Choice funding for School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships. Information on the changes is available online. Counselling The new mobile-enabled eheadspace website offers teenagers and young adults support when and where they need it for issues such as bullying, depression, anxiety and relationship breakups. NBN-EESS projectsThe National Broadband Network Education-Enabled Skills and Services (NBN-EESS) program has twelve projects that are underway that seek to utilise high speed bandwidth to explore learning and teaching opportunities particularly for those in rural and remote locations. Further information is available via the NBN-EESS website. Queensland Globe The Queensland government has launched a new spatial data resource – Queensland Globe. Queensland Globe is an online tool which allows users to explore spatial data about Queensland using the Google Earth application. The information includes available imagery, property boundaries and addresses, instant access to SmartMaps. Future State Greats assists students through sporting scholarships. Involvement in sport is used to modify student behaviours, improve attendance, discipline and learning outcomes. Information on Aspirations4Kids and Future State Great Elite programs are available on the website. Financial Literacy Program StartSmart The Commonwealth Bank Foundation is sending a SmartStart brochure to all schools to explain this financial literacy initiative and to encourage registrations. The Commonwealth Bank Foundation Teaching Awards program is also available this year. Philanthropy The Queensland Community Foundation (QCF) is calling on nominations for a Junior Philanthropist of the Year – students from Years 7 to 12. |
