Please be aware of the protocols in the 2013 Handbook for Principals. All teachers participating in the tests should now have a copy, or download at: www.qsa.qld.edu.au/8021.html. Please read the protocols carefully. Persuasive Writing Task One of the features of last year’s writing task was the prevalence of the five-paragraph essay. The writing of many students suggested they were focused only on the structure. While students may score well using this form, they can only do so if they begin with well-developed ideas that are developed through the form. Students who did not score well wrote to the five-paragraph formula, but often slotted in unrelated or poorly related ideas. The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) 2012 data was recently released. The AEDI website provides a National Report and community level results. Principals have received an email with instructions on how to register their school to access the AEDI School Profile System. Changes to User Choice funding for SATs The Department of Education Training and Employment has announced changes to User Choice funding for School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships. Information on the changes is available online. Christian Meditation Coming Home – Christian Meditation for Children and Young People is an online resource for the practice and teaching of Christian meditation. Counselling The new mobile-enabled eheadspace website offers teenagers and young adults support when and where they need it for issues such as bullying, depression, anxiety and relationship breakups. Differentiation in the 21st Century Visit the QSA website – Catering for Diversity with links to inclusive strategies and templates. Early School Leavers Longitudinal study The first report from the Early School Leavers Longitudinal study has been released. The report provides data on the post-school transitions of Queensland’s early school leavers from 2010. New Arts and Geography Resources Asia Education Foundation will be adding 12 Arts and 12 Geography online modules that will provide curriculum alignment and teacher advice, stimulus resources and student activities. NBN-EESS projectsThe National Broadband Network Education-Enabled Skills and Services (NBN-EESS) program has twelve projects that are underway that seek to utilise high speed bandwidth to explore learning and teaching opportunities particularly for those in rural and remote locations. Nutrition Australia Queensland’s Food Smart Schools The program can provide a variety of quality nutrition, menu planning and food safety services for school smart choices tuckshop. These services could be included in your tuckshop and canteen and makeover program. Policy and Research Scan The Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian’s Policy and Research Scan provides a monthly overview of key publications, research, and events concerning the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. QCT eNews The latest issue of QCT eNews provides information about Standard 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments with links to the AITSL website for Illustrations of Practice. QSA Connect The Queensland Studies Authority latest newsletter has important information about the distribution and checking of NAPLAN materials and P-10 Science resources. Scootle as a teaching tool In Scootle you can access digital resources directly linked to the Australian Curriculum. Over 16,000 interactives, videos, work samples, units of work and more are waiting to be discovered. Support for families Kids Matter have launched a new enewsletter specifically for parents, carers and families. It contains expert information, tips and strategies to help families. The Wonder of Science program The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) has developed a website Wonder of Science for students and teachers. Year 7 to Secondary Promotional Video The QCEC Year 7 to Secondary Taskforce has produced a video resource to assist schools and school authorities to communicate key messages about the Catholic sector move of Year 7 to secondary school from 2015. Young Minds Matter Survey A national Young Minds Matter survey will be undertaken this year. The survey includes questions about symptoms of emotional and behavioural problems, mental disorders, and the use of counselling, support and other health services. |

Creative Generation Excellence Awards Submissions are now open from Queensland schools that offer senior visual art for 2013 Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art. Submissions close 15 July. Future Leaders Free copies of Future Leaders publications are available for schools. Future State Greats Future State Greats assists students through sporting scholarships. Involvement in sport is used to modify student behaviours, improve attendance, discipline and learning outcomes. Information on Aspirations4Kids and Future State Great Elite programs are available on the website. Financial Literacy Program StartSmart The Commonwealth Bank Foundation is sending a SmartStart brochure to all schools to explain this financial literacy initiative and to encourage registrations. The Commonwealth Bank Foundation Teaching Awards program is also available this year. NAB Schools First Applications for NAB Schools First Awards are now open. Philanthropy The Queensland Community Foundation (QCF) is calling on nominations for a Junior Philanthropist of the Year – students from Years 7 to 12. Premier's Reading Challenge Registrations are now open for the primary school students to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Spirit of Catholic Education Awards Nominations for the 2013 Spirit of Catholic Education Awards for individuals making an outstanding contribution to the life of school communities and other Catholic education agencies across Queensland are now open. Stars for Cleaner Greener Schools Keep Queensland Beautiful is inviting schools to register their existing practices and actions for assessment on litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling, as part of a new Cleaner Greener Schools Accreditation process. Tuckshop Makeover Grants Applications are now open for the Smart Choices Tuckshop and Canteen Makeover Program. The program aims to build upon the implementation of Smart Choices in schools by increasing the nutritional value of foods and drinks supplied in schools. |
