STATE AND NATIONAL SCENENAPLAN and the AEDC
Students who are developmentally vulnerable on the language and cognitive domain, or on the communication and general knowledge domain of the AEDC, have lower NAPLAN numeracy and reading test scores. These students have lower NAPLAN scores in their first year of testing, and do not catch up. Who are our developmentally vulnerable students and what are we doing to overcome this vulnerability? Modules The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) in conjunction with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) has developed a series of online coaching modules. The first in a series of modules was How to teach reading which was released in mid-2014. DETE has advised that feedback to date on the module – from both early career and experienced teachers – has been very positive. The next two modules How to teach writing and How to teach mathematics are now available on Scootle. These modules have been developed to promote evidence-based decision making, strengthen pedagogical practice and deepen teacher knowledge in the teaching of reading, writing and mathematics. They integrate current research and effective practice. Designed for teachers to complete with the support of a coach, these modules comprise six episodes and are self-paced, optional and free of charge to complete. The How to teach science and How to assess learning and use evidence to differentiate modules are currently in development.
